sustainacraft Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Hiroshi Suetsugu, hereafter "sustainacraft") and Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, Representative Executive Officer and President: Shinichi Sasayama, hereafter “Tokyo Gas”)) are pleased to announce that they have entered into a business partnership agreement for early financing of nature-based voluntary carbon credits.

Background and purpose of partnership

Tokyo Gas and sustainacraft together aim to identify promising nature-based projects from the large global project pool using data-driven metrics. Engaging with carbon offset projects at the pre-issuance stage is intended to reduce the risk of quality issues and unstable procurement that have befallen some post-issuance carbon credit offtakes in recent years. Compared to procurement of already-issued carbon credits, procuring credits from projects in the early pre-issuance stage requires assessing the validity of projects based on limited information. sustainacraft’s expertise in project analysis and in-house verification technology will be leveraged to evaluate important characteristics of early-stage candidate projects such as the number of credits to be issued, the appropriateness of the project plan and the nature of involvement of residents local to the project site. This partnership aims to ensure Tokyo Gas’s access to high-quality carbon credits so that the company can offer products such as carbon-neutral liquefied natural gas (LNG).

sustainacraft's work in the carbon credit field

With the mission of promoting the circulation of funds for natural capital, sustainacraft has been conducting research and development with a focus on natural capital evaluation technology. In October 2023, sustainacraft was selected for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's SBIR Phase 3 project with the theme of "Technology development for quantifying naturally derived carbon and biodiversity credits." sustaincraft's in-house carbon offset assessment methodologies include satellite remote sensing and causal inference technologies, and will be expanded to include utilization of environmental DNA and other in-situ data for analyzing biodiversity co-benefit credits in nature-based carbon offset projects.
